Autonomous Driving Finds Mixed Opinions Among Americans

If you polled people on the street, you’d find no shortage of opinions about autonomous driving, likely running the spectrum from “Really excited about it,” to “It is bringing the apocalypse,” and of course, a lot of in-between. In a much bigger way, that’s exactly what Volvo Cars did: it conducted a huge online survey about autonomous driving, garnering close to 50,000 responses by June 28th. The results are in, and if you were wondering how Americans feel about autonomous cars, opinions are mixed.

As might be expected, folks in California and New York were more likely to feel favorably about autonomous vehicles than the rest of the country, but the general sentiment overall was a positive one. On the warm side of things, 86 percent of Californians and 90 percent of New Yorkers believe that autonomous vehicles can make life easier, which is contrasted rather sharply by the mere 52 percent of Illinoisan respondents who would trust an autonomous vehicle to make decisions regarding safety.

One place nearly everyone agreed, however, was when it came to the role of governments and local lawmakers: 90 percent feel that governments and local authorities are too slow to react to the implementation of autonomous driving, which should serve as a real wake-up call for our elected officials.

“The difference between states regarding the safety benefits of autonomous cars highlights why we need a federal framework for autonomous driving regulations. Volvo believes that autonomous driving vehicles should give you the freedom to choose when you want to drive and when you want to delegate driving to the car. The Future of Driving survey confirmed that consumers seek this freedom as autonomous driving technologies are introduced.” —Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO of Volvo Car USA

It may not be here yet, but autonomous vehicles would seem to be the way of the future. Here at Pedersen Volvo, we agree with the 68 percent of people who believe that, regardless of autonomous driving, driving manually is a feature that should be preserved. Otherwise, you completely lose the joy of driving, the connection of man and machine, and there is real joy to be had there. So if you’re in the market for a trustworthy luxury vehicle that will make your morning commute feel like a joyride, come on into our Fort Collins, CO showroom and we’ll do our best to match you with the perfect Volvo car or SUV for all your motoring needs.
